1) Residency
You must have been a permanent resident (green card holder) for at least five years (or three years if you are the spouse of a U.S. citizen).
2) Physical Presence
You must have lived within the United States for at least half of the five years (or three years if you are the spouse of a U.S. citizen) immediately prior to filing your citizenship application.
3) Good Moral Character
You must be a person of good moral character during the five years (or three years if you are the spouse of a U.S. citizen) preceding your citizenship application. U.S. Citizenship Requirements
To become a U.S. citizen you will need to complete form N-400, but first you must make sure you are eligible. You are eligible to apply for citizenship through the naturalization process if you:
- Are at least 18 years old
- Are a Green Card holder
- Are able to read, write, and speak basic English
- Have a basic understanding of U.S. history and government
- Have lived for at least 3 months in the state where you will apply
- You have not spent more than one year at a time outside the U.S.
- Have resided continuously in the United States for at least 5 years as a permanent resident immediately preceding the date of filing your application
- Have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing your application
- Are a person of good moral character
